Prayer Island

Peak-hour traffic, getting the children ready for school, yelling at a fellow commuter in a suburban train, cooking dinner after a trying day at work. Whew! Feel like something the cat dragged in?

But now salvation is within kissing distance -- at Mumbai's seven Peace Parks developed by the Prajapati Brahma Kumaris, an international spiritual organisation. Mumbai's gladed retreats are equipped with pyramid-shaped meditation rooms and umbrella-shaped spiritual and guidance centres.

The Kalachowkie Peace Park in Mumbai's chaotic belly, is usually crowded in the evenings with harried housewives. "They come here to meditate and feel one with the power above," says Brahma Kumari Harsha Ben.

At dusk, the men join them on the way back from work. Then as night falls, it's time to leave these tranquil islands and plunge back into the frenetic city with renewed spirit.
