Hell for Leather It
didn't happen by design. But the hot stuff on the ramp at last week's
international Leather 2000 fashion show in Chennai, got hotter when it got
under the skin of animal-rights' activists in the city. The garments
themselves didn't offer much that was new: choreographer Hemant Trevedi,
for the seventh year running, presented an assortment of clothes, shoes
and travel accessories. But when the same old thing is donned by some of
the leggiest and brawniest models in the country -- Madhu Sapre, Dino
Morea, John Abraham, Yukta Mookhey, the latest Miss India winners, you
know the lot -- it's enough to burn up the catwalk. And while the
mannequins strutted around in black, white and red, they had animal lovers
of the city seeing red. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
that's headquartered in Norfolk, USA, and now has a presence in India,
staged a protest earlier in the day at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor
Stadium. They obviously had a sense of humour to match their ire. One PETA
member had an unusual way of getting the message across, donning a cow
costume with a sign that read: "Keep my family off your feet -- don't
buy leather." Trevedi's salvo to them: "Why lobby against
leather when you're still game for Kolhapuris?" Next shot?
