High Jinks at The Derby The
females attracted more attention than the fillies at Mumbai's social event
of the year, The McDowell Indian Derby, last week. The 1,000-plus guests
with their diamonds, backless cholis and double-breasted suits at the
pre-Derby event held at the RWITC grounds, enjoyed an evening of Manish
Malhotra, Wendell Rodericks, Sangeeta Chopra and Manish Arora's designs,
followed by an oomphy display of samba and more by the British troupe
Sophistican. So what if there were not enough chairs for the guests; or
that McDowell chief Vijay Mallya called Yukta Mookhey "Mukta Yookhey"
The prize money of Rs 43 lakh more than made up for the gaffes. "What
I don't like about the race," said Mallya, "is that I do not
have a horse running." What M.A.M. Ramaswamy liked about it was that
his horse, Swift Chieftain, won. Something to neigh about.
