India Today issue dt March 6, 2000Say No to Leather
She doesn't mind showing a bit of skin, but Indian leather is out, says Pamela Anderson. Pamela Anderson At a recent press meet in Milan, the Baywatch babe, a spokesperson for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, lambasted the Indian leather industry for its cruel treatment of animals. A video featuring Pam (not what you're thinking, it's an expos on the international leather trade) will be shown on TV channels worldwide. Sample this appeal from the lady: "Leather from Indian cattle makes its way to clothing stores around the world ... Please think twice when buying your next jacket, belt, pair of shoes or gloves." Maybe she should wear more clothes before preaching.

Two Sides of the Same Coin
P.Kalyana Sundaram
Are philanthropy and diplomacy two sides of the same coin? Seems so. P. Kalyana Sundaram, a 59-year-old social worker from Tamil Nadu, says he has a gift for Bill Clinton on his coming visit: "a 1776 coin valued at Rs 30 crore". Said to be one of eight minted to mark America's Independence, it was passed on to him recently by a coin collector friend. "I never intended to sell it to the US Government since it rightly belongs to them," he says. Goodwill mission?

The Big Break
Chaitanya Bhosle
Sure, he's Asha Bhosle's grandson. But Chaitanya Bhosle's not cashing in on that. The 25-year-old former Lintas executive has replaced Dalip Tahil as Che Guevara in Alyque Padamsee's Evita. He's been a radio jockey, performed with his band Oxygen, composed jingles, even acted in small plays, but this one's The Big Break. Says mama, Alka Dabolkar: "He wants to make it on his own merit. He wants to grow beyond the tag he carries with him." No better way to do it.

Double Role
Vasundhara DasShe's a pop star in the making. She's also a movie star now. Vasundhara Das, the light-eyed lass in Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram, has already sung a sexy little number for Sushmita Sen in Shankar's film Mudalvan. She's also done a few songs for A.R. Rahman, and is busy cutting her debut album right now. Says the busy 22-year-old from Bangalore who dreams of a long-time "double career" in singing and acting: "I am not going to do one without the other.'' She's good at both, so it helps.
