No Show It
was the show that could have been. An AIDS fundraiser organised by Action
India trust last week threw in an impressive fashion show, a surprise star
on the ramp and works donated by hotshot painters, none of which was
enough to fill the lawns at Delhi's Taj Mahal Hotel. Shweta and Nikhil
Nanda showed up, so did US Ambassador Richard Celeste and wife Jacqueline
Lundquist (never mind that it was Clinton-eve), but most others gave it a
miss. Designers Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla, Tarun Tahiliani, Ritu Kumar,
Suneet Varma, Rohit Bal and J.J. Valaya were there, but then their designs
were part of the show. Amjad Ali Khan and wife were there, but then their
sons were performing that night. Dimple Kapadia had flown in from Mumbai,
but then she was modelling an outfit. Just about 120 donor passes of Rs
5,000 each were sold, far short of the goal of 350, and the planned art
auction (proceeds to go towards building a Holistic Aids Care Centre) was
cancelled. Action India president Nafisa Ali put up a brave front, a pity
she had to considering that so much work had been put in. "I didn't
want to fill up chairs just to show that people had come," she said,
adding, "There aren't enough people, so we'll hold the auction
another day." Let's take a rain check on that then.
