Oh Lord! a Play

Musicians, dancers, crooners ... everyone who is someone in Chennai's rock band circuit came together last week in a retelling of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice classic Jesus Christ Superstar. And to a full hall, never mind that it was Jesus' third coming on the Chennai stage. The live music this time round had the audience whistling right to the end. So did choreographer Jeffery Vardon and his band of live-wire dancers from the Hot Shoe Dance Company who kept flitting on and off stage in skimpy outfits -- nothing biblical about this. What added to the charm was that the cast of 57 consisted of mostly already familiar faces in the city's entertainment circuit. Like singers Shudeep (as Judas Iscariot), Vinita Nayar (Mary Magdalene), musicians Keith Peters and Sudeen Prabhakar. Director Michael Muthu made quite an impression with his voice and his purple cape -- he played Pontius Pilate -- though even that is not reason enough to forgive him for the rather loud music or the cramped visual effects. "The production could indeed have been better," he admits. "Wish we had more time to rehearse." Try a fourth coming.
