Comeback
Girl
She's still around. EX-Miss India Swaroop Sampat,
who had us in splits in the telecomedy Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, has turned
producer with the play Khel. It
stars hubby Paresh Rawal and Naseeruddin Shah, and though she's not sure
which of them to look at when she watches the play, this she's sure of:
that everyone who's seen it "has been impressed by the sheer
performance"; and that she's wanted to do this for a long time. As
long as she's back, it's good enough for us.
It's Show Time!
TV was once the place for wannabe or flop film actors. No more, it
seems. Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Urmila Matondkar,
Akshay Kumar,
Shilpa Shetty, Shakti Kapoor and
Gulshan Grover have starred in a theatre production that's now been
made into a show for Sony TV. It's called Phir Bhi Dil Hai Filmistani, a
take on the film most people heard of but few saw. Says Raveena Raj Kohli,
Sony's VP: "We wanted to break the mould." So, it appears, did
the stars -- no doubles, no retakes, no breaks.
His Rhythm's Gonna Get You
He's determined to get the most out of life. Having acted in films
(Heat and Dust, Saaz), even done a fair share of modelling,
tabla honcho Zakir Hussain is hosting a TV
show called Taal. Nothing to do with the Aishwarya Rai-Anil Kapoor starrer;
this Taal (Rhythm) has the curly-haired maestro taking viewers through the
history of Indian music. Director Kirti Srivastava gushes: "Zakir
Hussain can relate to anyone." Good for the show.
Legends of the Fall
Such requests don't come often. So when Lata
Mangeshkar asked
Amitabh Bachchan to share the stage with her
during the second Lata Live concert in Mumbai last week, he agreed.
"In 1980, Amitabh had wished that I should sing with him for a stage
show in America," says one legend of the other, "so this time it
was my wish that he should share the stage with me." The two sang Yeh
kaha aa gaye hum, yoohin saath chalte chalte from the movie Silsila. It
was a favour returned. And some history made.
