Kerala: Resort

L
ooking for a summer break? Check into the Poovar Island Resort in the placid backwaters of Kerala, with its mix of floating cottages and conventional accommodation. Set amidst 12.5 acres of coconut plantations on a beach 31 km from Thiruvananthapuram airport, the resort offers boat rides to a fishing village, barbeque nights, an Ayurveda and yoga centre, a swimming pool, two bars and backwater cruises among other facilities. Rates (summer package valid till September 30): Rs 8,333 for a two-night-and-three-day stay in a "superior seafacing cottage", and Rs 9,500 for a home on the waters for the same period. For details, call Sarovar Park Plaza Hotels and Resorts on (022) 285-0951/2/3. Fax: (022) 285-0954.

Mumbai: Restaurant

Bay of Bombay is a theme restaurant with a convincing "navy" ambience. On board are a compass, foghorn, anchors and portholes. And there's only seafood on offer. The Cocktail Gamberretti, Pot Au Feu Soup and Red Snapper Fillet, originally from coastal areas like Kerala, Goa and Calcutta taste authentic. The desserts, however, leave a lot to be desired. After all that delicious coastal food, you have to end your meal with plain old ice cream or fresh fruit. Dull. You might need a compass to find the place, located as it is in the middle of Crawford Market. An average meal for two would cost Rs 600 inclusive of taxes. Alcoholic beverages extra. For more information call (022) 205-6173 or 205-8397.

Calcutta: Kid shop

Little kids can mean big profits. To cash in on the pre-school market, Fisher-Price, a subsidiary of Mattel Inc, have set up shop in Landmark Bookstore with their development toys. The launch began with a 10-day promo for pre-schoolers. Among the events, the two-day sit and draw had over 250 participants. Fisher-Price toys are labelled as "cheerful, innovative, funny and surprising". Only the Pooh range, Snoopy dogs, activity tables, gyms and walkers are available but more are on their way. The store hopes so are the customers.Prices range from Rs 150 to 2000. Call (033) 282-2617.

Bangalore: Theatre

Theatre buffs have something to look forward to. Artistes Repertory Theatre is staging Middle of Silence written by Sri Lankan Ruwanthie de Chickera. This play is a haunting, no-holds barred look at poverty and dependance. Set in Colombo, it reflects any urban South Asian setting and features prominent theatre personalities like Pathy Aiyar and Nala Ponnappa. Playing on May 12 and 13, 7:30 p.m. at Alliance Francaise on Thimmaiah Road. Call (080) 2258762.

Delhi: Furniture
