Facelift for the stony maidens One's
face is blackened, the other's woefully coated with grime. But Justice and
Mercy, the two figures atop the lofty Gothic arches of the Bombay High
Court are about to receive a facelift. Mumbai's heritage conservationists
and some engineers from the Public Works Department have began the task of
restoring both ladies who have withstood 140 monsoons and relentless
pollution remarkably well. "But if we hadn't got down to saving them
now they would have collapsed this year," says architect Rahul
Mehrotra, an active conservationist. Meanwhile, the damsels in distress
have meekly submitted to quartz-sand claypacks to "desalinate"
their weather-beaten faces. Now Mercy is all but restored, while Justice
awaits her turn. If only the same could be said metaphorically.
