Time out Unassuming
fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh immediately recoils when the
spotlight adjusts on him. In fact, when the
fashion show of the NIFT graduate concluded at Delhi's Taj Palace
hotel on May 7 amid explosive clapping, Singh had to be wheedled into
making a spare ramp appearance. Lisa Ray, the toothy brand ambassador for
Rado, the sponsors of the show, let Singh also go without a customary
speech because "the clothes did all the talking". The clich
was appropriate; Singh's prismatic spring/summer line covered it
all -- both the altered and the constant. So there were diaphanous
parallels with dotted plumes, mock-leather overcoats, applique in white
and black, georgette formals along with regulation
figure-huggers and tropical easywear in ivory. The appreciative
audience were the usual fashion voyeurists
(like Rohit Bal & Co), Singh's batchmates Manish Arora and Puja
Nayyar, and the other brand ambassador, teary newsmaker Kapil Dev, now
wearing a smile. The fashion show also saw the international launch of
Cerix, the new "unaligned bracelet watch". No time like show
time.
