Remember the Sanjeev Nanda drunk-driving case or the Jessica Lal shooting? If not, you can see recreations of these bizarre incidents in Rajdhani, a new TV serial launched by the controversial producer Bobby Bedi (recall Fire and Bandit Queen?). Bedi's show will air on Star Plus on Mondays at 10 p.m. "Delhi's character is unique, maybe because of all the political power in this city," explains Bedi. "That's what we've tried to show in Rajdhani -- family drama, politics and intrigue." The story is set in a feudal Delhi household, spanning three generations. It highlights the relationship between the two main protagonists, a farmer (Cecil Qadir) and an aspiring politician (Dalip Tahil). "I think Rajdhani's USP is a contemporary setting with a charming old-world feel," says theatre veteran Lushin Dubey, who plays a typical Indian bahu in this serial. "Carefully planned locations like the Pataudi Mahal and a typical English bungalow give the serial an authentic feel," insists Dubey. Also visible are some fresh new faces. "I play the spoilt brat who always gets her way," laughs model Neha Dhupia, 21, in her first ever role on television.
Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia (of Star Bestsellers fame) and scripted by Farrukh Dhondy of Channel 4, Rajdhani has all the right ingredients. "I think people will relate to it," says Bedi. Well, since it's Bedi its likely to ruffle some feathers.
