 Some
of India's most valuable companies today have one thing in common. Their
south Indian addresses. Wipro, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computers and
thousands of other thriving infotech companies have transformed the
southern states from a land of silk, sambhar and coffee to a land of
silicon, software and computers.
The economic resurgence of the South is hardly surprising. West Bengal is strike-stricken, Maharashtra mafia-ridden and Delhi suffocated by the bureaucracy. In pleasant contrast, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are well governed, stable and administratively the most business-friendly. It is no coincidence that when Microsoft, IBM and Cisco landed in India, the South was their preferred destination. This growth is propelled by the availability of the largest pool of technical manpower, like Tamil Nadu, which churns out 22,000 engineers every year. But it has not stopped out-of-town executives from flocking there, kick-starting new businesses, getting rich quick and, as a result, altering lifestyles. So this week we decided to examine how the new golden triangle of India, with Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad as its vertices, will drive growth in the future. What our team, led by Senior Correspondent Methil Renuka in Chennai and assisted by Associate Editor Amarnath K. Menon in Hyderabad and Principal Correspondent Stephen David in Bangalore, found most impressive was how rapidly southern dynamos have changed the way they think. As Renuka says, "There seems to be a genuine desire not just to get ahead but stay ahead." But our focus was not restricted merely to business, for whether it is A.R. Rahman's music or Kerala's tourism industry, the South as a whole appears to be in ascendancy. To reiterate what I said, in India it is the only address that counts today. .
