Art in aid Last
week, the The West Bengal Voluntary Health Association (WBVHA) roped in 28
Calcutta artists to paint on aids and leprosy in a project called
Feelings. And with dramatic results -- the poignant images showed a woman
cohabiting with a bug, a jumble of menacing viruses, a leprosy patient's
bandaged hand. "We're trying to show that artists can bring
hard-hitting awareness," says WBVHA's D.P. Poddar. But not everyone
agrees. Participating painter Prakash Karmakar says that people who need
to be told about aids don't come to galleries. But for the association at
least (their next theme is adolescent angst), there's no show without a
cause.
