Musical union

Sixty-nine-year-old performer Granmoun Lele, a rage in the French island of Reunion, only talks in a heavy dialect of French ... and his manager knows no English. But they together eventually succeeded in making their point: Lele's grandmother was a "slave" in Kerala early this century and this trip to Delhi "was like a homecoming". So with his wife and eight of his 13 children, Lele hopped hard to maloya, a musical cocktail perfected by sugarcane workers of the region. The evening, strung together by Music Today (which released composer Indraneel's album), Alliance Francaise and Friends of Music, also saw buffs take to the floor --  the tireless Lele  continuing  till the very last.
