Dead designs Stopgap
art and overburdened design combined in an uneasy marriage at a show
called 999 in which Delhi's vis-à-vis gallery and Art Inc. joined hands.
Sure, Shambavi went offtrack
with some bloodied peepal leaves and
Subba Ghosh turned on the heat with sculptural outbursts of genitalia (he
calls them "the objects that make lovemaking convenient"), but
otherwise the surfeit of oohs from the crowd seemed largely misdirected.
The photographs, handbags, rice paper shades, jewellery and stainless
steel vases by as many as 40 artists was more like a tired rehearsal of
old forms. The consolation: everything was priced below Rs 999. And the
two galleries, on the verge of a permanent wedlock, worked extremely hard
to put it all up. Well, the road to dispirited art is always paved with
good intentions.
