Looking Glass

Calcutta: Computers

The IT industry believes in catching 'em young. Last week, when IT Kids, a new computer learning centre, opened in Calcutta, the target group was four to 14-year-olds. But the programs they handle are no child's play. There's multimedia, computer animation (where they get to disembody Prabhu Deva or study A.R. Rahman's music) and project work on the Internet. The centre starts out with summer camps which will be followed up with the one-year Young World course costing Rs 5,000 for a 42-week stint. For more details call (033)321-3861.

Delhi: Dance

The Danceworx, Delhi's very own dancing school targetted specifically at jazz jitterbugs, is roping in Jaan Freeman of the Freeman Repertory Dance company of New York to conduct a  workshop. But Freeman will not be taking on beginners -- participants at the three-week workshop will require some dance experience, which could also include knowledge of Indian classical dance. The workshop begins on June 3 and costs Rs 2,000 per head (Rs 850 without Freeman's celebrated guidance). Registrations end on May 30. For more information call (011) 640-5605.

Shop

With the opening of a swanky cigar lounge, the select group of puffers in the Capital have a reason to celebrate. Called Castro's and located in the Santushti shopping complex, the lounge stocks a variety of Habanos-Cuban cigars (like Cohiba,  Romeo and Juliet, Bolivar and Punch) ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000. The lounge encourages its customers to experiment with different brands, mellow and strong. Call (011) 467-5682 for more information.

Bangalore: Shop

The Swadeshi Store, a single-room shop run by the Gupta family, is a hot destination for chic Bangaloreans looking for elegant home furnishings. All the furnishings (that's mats, cushion covers, bedspreads, curtains, bath mats, hammocks, you name it) are completely hand-woven and yarn-dyed by 600 weavers from Kannur in Kerala. And since the Guptas do all three things -- manufacturing, export and retail, the  cost benefit is passed on to the consumer. The cushion covers cost between Rs 90 and Rs 250, placemats between  Rs 120 and Rs 216 and hammocks between Rs 850 and Rs 1,050. Checkout the store at 31 Krishnanagar Industrial Layout, Hosur Main Road or call (080) 553-2061.
