Showing
the way
You
weren't looking at an ordinary car rally when you saw 33 Hyundai cars
gingerly move through Delhi's swelling Sunday traffic last week. The
difference: the navigators guiding women drivers in a bid to become the
best pathfinders of the day were blind. Indipopper Shibani Kashyap, in a
blazing yellow kurta, joined hands with model Ruchi Malhotra, for the
customary flag-off at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, while the keyed-up
navigators immediately took out their Brailled maps. Says Malhotra, ceo of
the altruistic Empress Club that has been organising many such events in
the past: "The idea is to initiate the disabled into popular sports
-- and also to have lots of fun in the process." So the victor in
this sporty battle of Brailles: Vipin Malhotra, a 31-year-old lecturer of
political science in Delhi's Shri Aurobindo College who says he's been
sharpening his navigating skills for the past 15 years. And the time taken
was a little over an hour; not bad if you consider that the tricky
circuitous route covered 50 km in overcrowded Delhi.
