The Music Review Ohm
Karma-Pravin Mani: &
Om-Lata Mangeshkar: Om.
Say the word, feel the resonance, experience the depth and the power. It's
the sacred syllable that contains the essence of the universe. Lata
Mangeshkar has a feel for the mantra and the background music in this
album by Tips is soothing. Contrast that with Pravin Mani's Ohm. The
album, despite the electrical connotations of the title, is also a
spiritual offering, an "electro-ambient album", as composer Mani
puts it. The numbers in this collection explore different facets of the
mantra. Ohm has been created using modern technology and sounds from a
variety of musical instruments not only from India, but also from Tibet,
China and Indonesia. This one has youthful techno music. Spiritually
upbeat. -S. Sahaya Ranjit The
Summer Album There's
a reason why this one's called The Summer Album -- it's light, fun
for the most part, and in some parts so senseless as to ensure that
interest in it won't last beyond the season. Rigga digga dong song,
Lambada and Iko Iko are immensely danceable numbers, but Papa Winnie's You
are my sunshine does unforgivable things to the song, even mindlessly
merging it with bits from Take me home country roads.
