Mumbai: Restaurant

Yet another Chinese restaurant in the city. Ming Yang recreates the atmosphere of eateries in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Typical Chinese decor -- lacquered furniture, silk scrolls and paper lanterns. Another plus -- it has a stunning view of the ocean. The menu prepared by a visiting chef from Hong Kong has a few superb fish preparations like Thong Chao Ha (sweet and sour prawns) and Tschao Hai (fried crab). A bit expensive: a meal for two (drinks and taxes included) would cost Rs 2,500. At Regent Hotel, Land's End, Bandra. Call (022) 644-1234.

Directory

The Photographer's Guild of India (PGI), started for professional photographers to exchange industry news and photography trends, plans to launch a series of directories, biannually. Its first, 'The Portfolio' was released in May 2000. It showcases sample works of 82 photographers like Adil Bharucha, Madhur Shroff, Sumeet Chopra and Shiv Saran. So next time you have a specific image in mind and can't figure out who'll capture it best, refer to The Portfolio. Priced at Rs 1,000, for more information call Marilyn Moses at (022) 261-4781

Delhi: Book festival

The British Council has organised the Ladybird Book Festival for kids. Ladybird  publishes highly abridged versions of popular classics like Ivanhoe and Red Riding Hood to encourage youngsters to read and learn English. There's also a dictionary workshop for kids between ages 7 and 12. For details call (011) 371-1401.

Restaurant

Connaught Place is getting even zippier. T.G.I. Friday's opens next week. Identical to its Vasant Vihar branch, it has the same fun atmosphere and enthusiastic staff who even have a 'birthday song' for their customers. Candy-striped tables, a blinking traffic light and reddish walls add to the cheerful ambience. The highlight: happy hours where you get two drinks for the price of one. Mostly American-Mexican fare like the Classic Spare Ribs and Friday's Nachos. A meal for two (drinks and taxes included) would cost Rs 2,000. Call (011) 371-1992/1.

Chennai: Book Store

For children and young book lovers here's another place to hang out. Tulika Publishers' Goodbooks Bookstore and Resource Centre has an entire range of fiction and picture books to choose from. On the cards: a host of storytelling sessions, readings and interface with celebs like tennis champion Ramesh Krishnan and Bharatnatyam dancer Leela Samson. The bookstore is all set to go online. At 4th street, Abhiramapuram. Call (044) 498-1639.
