Life of an animal lover

A freewheeling British nurse (cum ambulance driver) is going to be soon remembered as Bangalore's greatest animal lover. Crystal Rogers (1906-1996) moved to India in 1958 to open an animal shelter -- Animals' Friend -- in Delhi which she doggedly ran for 20 years. After a  philanthropic stint in Jaipur she went to Bangalore where in 1990 she founded Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) along with volunteers like Suparna Ganguly. Now an anecdote-rich autobiography (also containing Rogers' communications with her dead boyfriend), Mad Dogs And An Englishwoman (Penguin), will be launched in Bangalore on June 24  by actress and animal-lover Amala. cupa now plans to build a Rs 1 crore veterinary hospital on land donated to it by a government college. Rogers would have been happy -- she had to change her house every year because the landlords hated her animals. Wasn't their CUPA tea.
