Bored of the USA

It was supposed to be "a celebration of American food, wine and music" but besides the turkey and the hosts, the American ambassador and his wife Jacqueline Lundquist, the Jack Daniel's-sponsored evening at the ambassador's residence in Delhi, was surprisingly unAmerican. A mournful pianist played the theme song of the Titanic (not exactly celebration music) while a grim  mix of people stood near the bar. The hostess  kept up a steady stream of prattle while greeting the guests: "Wow, nice outfit." and "How's your husband? He's a journalist, right?" Wrong, the lady was single. Later Lundquist busied herself with her son ... in full view of the cameras. However, since even the most die-hard Delhi party animals gave the evening a miss, the bored photographers were wondering what to click. "We plan to sponsor more evenings like this," threatened Amrit Kiran Singh of Brown and Foreman. Let's hope the next one's in America.
