Culture Town

Last week a Calcutta-based company unveiled plans for the Rs 218 crore Fortune City (a brainchild of vocalist A. Kanan) that will have all the trappings of a hi-tech music village -- villas, gyms, a club, a multiplex auditorium. "That's what it will take to reverse the organised cultural invasion by the West," says Dipankar Roy, president of Fortune Leisure. But soon enough there was a whiff of controversy -- Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, who was much-publicised as a board member, said he did not know anything about it. And a local artiste was heard complaining why he also didn't get to hear of it before. Why indeed?
