Stardome

It was billed as Bollywood's night out in London. Waving to the cameras and screaming fans at the Millennium Dome for the first-ever International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) were 70mm stalwarts, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Sonali Bendre and Sushmita Sen. And inside, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali broke with convention and shepherded his mother on stage to accept the best director award for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The organisers also ensured the evening had plenty of international flavour with a procession of celebs like Angelina Jolie, Susannah York, Kylie Minogue and Jackie Chan. The goof-ups: no one seemed prepared for the many absentees (notably Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor) and there were awkward moments that couldn't be mended by the comperes Yukta Mookhey and Anupam Kher. Shekhar Kapur, who received an award, took the opportunity to get patriotic: "I am so proud of Indian cinema and I'm so proud of my Indian roots." And should the guys behind IIFA be proud? Well, not exactly ... the overhyped event failed to live up to its billing.
