We're the best

Their idols? Archimedes and Fermat. Their idea of fun? Solving problems. Three Calcuttans and maths whizkids Abhisek Saha, Shomik Basu (both 17) and Sornendu Datta (15), head for the International Mathematics Olympiad being held in Seoul later this month. Number crunching is a gift. When Shomik was a six-year-old tot, his lecturer mother would ask him to add up the scores on test papers she corrected. "People always ask us if we can multiply five-digit numbers," says Abhisek, taking a second shot at the Olympiad since 1998. "Maths involves creativity too." Eighty-odd countries will participate in the Olympiad. "We've always liked maths, so it's never a task," says a hopeful Shomik. These boys, you can count on.
