India Today issue dated July 17, 2000Police Case
Hema Malini has done it. Dimple Kapadia has done it. Now Sushmita Sen will do it too. Forget the talk about how she's being overshadowed by Aishwarya Rai. In Ajaaz, the former Miss Universe even has the law on her side: she plays a cop in Punjab who is later promoted to an inspector with the CBI. WhySushmita Sen Sush? Says director Yogesh Ishwar: "Well, she just fits the role." And this time, unlike her earlier films like Biwi No. 1, she also gets the guy (Sunil Shetty) despite tough competition from the stunning Suman Ranganathan and the svelte Namrata Shirodkar. Nothing to beat our girl in uniform.

Serial Thrillers
Nethra Raghuraman
Unusual. very unusual. After impressive film debuts, models Nethra Raghuraman and Sanjay Suri are acting in the Zee serial Yehi to Pyar Hai (YTPH). "I signed YTPH before (the film) Pyaar Main Kabhie Kabhie," says Suri. Adds Raghuraman, heroine of Mahesh Mathai's Bhopal Express and a sizzling guest star in Govind Nihalani's Thakshak: "I didn't come here with a mindset that I'd do only films. I want to do good work." Good for her.

Southerly Winds
Reema Sen
More southward bound Mumbai starlets ... Model Reema Sen, 19-years-and-45-ad-films-old, is making her cinema debut in Minnale with current rage Madhavan. And Sameera Reddy, Meghna Reddy's sis who's done a music video, is paired with Ajith Kumar in Citizen. And Bollywood? Says Reddy: "I wanted to start my acting career down south, because I'm south Indian." Adds Sen: "Not that I haven't got offers from Bollywood, it's only now that I feel prepared. Besides, Hindi films take much longer." Professional-speak, already?

Rare Fare
Akshaye Khanna and Dimple Kapadia
Heard of the film in which Akshaye Khanna plays a guy in love with an older woman (Dimple Kapadia)? Rare, but not a first in an otherwise often regressive Hindi film industry. Earlier younger-man-older-woman-romances:

  • Phool aur Patthar with Dharmendra and Meena Kumari;
  • Doosra Aadmi starring Rishi Kapoor and Rakhee;
  • Ek Chadar Maili Si with Hema Malini and again, Kapoor;
  • Khiladiyon ka Khiladi with Rekha and Akshay Kumar.

And there's the Aamir Khan-Mumtaz-starrer that didn't work out. Now did you know that?
