Like Mom Like Son

Normally parents tell their kids what to do. This is just a little twist," says Quasar Thakore Padamsee. Actually, it's a big one. Quasar, 21, son of theatre personalities Dolly Thakore and Alyque Padamsee, will make his directorial debut in theatre with a production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. The trainee copywriter will also be directing his mother who has a lead role in the play. So Dolly, like the rest of Quasar's mostly fresher cast, will be attending workshops and rehearsing daily from 9 to 11 p.m. for two months straight. "He is," she says, "a hard taskmaster." Quasar, who has earlier directed plays at St Xavier's College, Mumbai, cast his mom because he sees in her "a certain genuineness of emotion which is not in abundance today". Known only as Q in theatre circles, he knows comparisons with father Alyque are inevitable. "Each one of us has his own style," says Q philosophically. He isn't worried. Nor is his leading lady. "Come on," Dolly says, "Q is so much better than Alyque." We'll see.
