Cat Call Not just nine lives, but P. G. Dinesh's cats live over 36 of his leaping black and white, red and azure paintings on show at Chennai's Apparao Galleries. The 27-year-old artist's inspiration could have been the 12 white, furry cats at his Thrissur home in Kerala where the temples and harvests also got him "closer to the folk arts". So though witty and whimsical, Dinesh's cats are coloured in the fiery red of Kali and the rituals typifying his village's temple festivals. But why personify his "pets", and do a whole series on them? Says Dinesh, who now works at Cholamandal Artists' Village, Chennai: "Cats are like people, they're funny beings." Seriously? -Methil Renuka |
