Pleased As Punch At 6:30 in the morning, amateur women boxers are working on their punches at Chennai's Nehru Stadium to prepare for the All-India Federation Cup in the city from July 11 to 15. These are Tamil Nadu's (and the South's) first batch of women boxers simply raring to enter the boxing arena. And adding gusto to the preparations were the just-concluded summer camp, which had an astonishing number of 50 young participants, and the state amateur boxing championships that decided the finalists. Sniffs P. Meenakshi, 19, gold medallist at the championships, after a gruelling workout: "It's a risky sport ... but we have some of the most courageous women. And post Federation Cup, we can go on to play the Olympics too." That'll be some knock-out. -Methil Renuka |
