Granny's Day Out It wasn't about catwalking or smooth talking. But this "pageant" in Chennai drew cheers all the same. At a "Lovable Grandma" contest last week, a dozen silver-haired grand dames, mostly from the host city, were given awards for being "lovable, gutsy, graceful and achievers". They were picked on the basis of glowing descriptions sent in by their grandchildren to the Guild of Women Achievers (GOWA), a Bangalore-based voluntary organisation. The function left the audience visibly moved. "I love her more than amma," sobbed S. Aishwarya, 13, whose grandma was one of the chosen ones. Said chief guest Ava Mukherjee, 75, the spunky grandmom in the Ayurvedic Concepts ads (not a grandma in real life yet): "It's great to be pampered for a change." It should happen more often. -Methil Renuka |
