Hummm Along

They come from different backgrounds and professions, but one thing binds them: a passion for music. Hummm, who did their first ever live show in Hyderabad last week, claim to be the country's first multi-lingual Indipoppers, jamming freely in English, Hindi and Tamil. They also claim to be the country's first girl-boy band. Forget the tall claims. Listen to their music. "Our songs are on issues like the girl child ... and harmonise the western groove with a strong Indian base," says lead singer Ravie Iyer, who gave up an advertising career for this. He's not the only one of the five who's given up something for music: Ruchika Christ quit the money-spinning corporate world; Kasturi Chincholikar left teaching. Rounding off the group are Joseph Sundaram, a mechanical engineer-turned-fashion designer, and Aparna G. Krishnan who's retained her job as a marketing exec with a TV channel. "The three Ms in our band name represent music with message and motivation," explains Sundaram. Beatles and Abba are their icons and Iyer says the group is also pledged to using music to promote brands. Any takers?
