India Today issue dated August 07, 2000With the competition among major television networks for viewership ratings getting more suspenseful than many of the programmes they air, it has become, literally, a see or saw battle to air the most popular serials and grab prime-time attention. Studio executives are working feverishly behind the scenes to produce plots that will rival the daily fare in South Block, the Lok Sabha or Ram Jethmalani's office. Here are some previews.

Kaun Ban Gaya Crorepati: A star-studded cast for this high-suspense thriller where the objective is to find out how many zeros our heroes have, or the other way round. The cast, which includes cricket's biggest stars, administrators and sports entrepreneurs, is a major asset. Just how major are their assets will be revealed in every succeeding episode, though a detailed sneak preview is being sneaked to newspapers each day at a fixed time. Makes viewers wonder if all those dropped catches were because of greasy palms.

Darr: Another gut-wrenching suspense thriller that has captured the imagination of a sena of viewers, if not the main protagonist, Bal Thackeray. Starring Chhagan Bhujbal, Gopinath Munde and a host of backroom players like Sharad Pawar and L.K. Advani, the plot is arresting, or not, depending on who has got the guts. Only serial to start off as high drama and end up as comic farce.

Family Fortunes: Another newly launched serial that's attracting a lot of public attention. Starring the dashing Ajay Jadeja and newcomer Aditi Jaitly, it has a complicated plot involving plots. While Jadeja's dashing off, centrestage is occupied by Aditi's mother, firebrand Jaya Jaitly who sheds some light on the relationship between Ajay and Aditi. Will they or won't they? Watch the next episode, sponsored by the Income-Tax Department.

Tu Tu Main Main: The side-splitting comedy serial that has got everyone in splits, including the ruling National Democratic Alliance and its allies. Starring the self-publicist Ram Jethmalani and the soft-spoken Soli Sorabjee, it shows that opposites can attract -- a lot of unnecessary flak. Jethmalani's star appeal lies in his ability to wash dirty linen in public, except that it usually turns out to be his own. However, there are rumours that he may be quitting to start a company specialising in teaching law to Supreme Court judges.

Movers and Shakers: A television adaptation of the popular Page 3 phenomena created by leading newspapers, it is intended to replace The Bold and the Beautiful as the most popular show about celebrity-watching. The only problem is that the same celebrities seem to feature in every episode, now that Priyanka is in absentia. If you've seen one episode, you've seen them all.

The None O'Clock News: Featuring two brand new anchors, Minister for Sports S.S. Dhindsa and Minister of State for Finance Dhananjaya Kumar, the prime-time programme is threatening to take the rest to the cleaners. Mainly because the two seem to have the uncanny knack of predicting events before they actually happen, like the contents of lockers before they are opened. Rich fare, but not necessarily fair.
