All Mixed Up..

How seriously a fashion school takes its students can be gauged from their shows. At a presentation by students of the National Institute of Fashion Design's Hauz Khas Enclave branch in Delhi last week, the design sequences were just another part of a melange of music and dance performances. An unfair diversion, especially since some of the students were rather impressive. Like the winner of the Most Creative Collection prize, Sandeep Malhotra, 19, who created "Bizarre Art" (boldly coloured patchwork on a white base) "because I'm a jolly person". And Overall Best Collection winner Sanjay Kumar, 22, who made a skirt that could be lengthened and shortened by the wearer by pulling a ribbon running through it. "It was unfair to the kids that the whole thing was mixed up with an entertainment evening," says designer Leena Singh, a judge that day. "It should have been a more serious fashion show." It's just a one-year-old institute, so next time, maybe?
