Prisoners in Play

There's plenty of hidden talent among the inmates of the 187-year-old Bangalore Central Jail. On July 23 a bunch of them, after training for 45 days under the watchful eyes of Kannada theatre directors Hulugappa Kattimani and Pramela Bengre, put up an impressive show of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in Kannada called Jundi Sheshanayaka. Additional Director General of Police, Prisons, L. Revanasiddaiah was among the 200 theatre lovers who clapped hard. "The audience does not have to look far to see the modern relevance of the play," he said. "It's art imitating life ... an empire torn by political intrigue and ambition, leading to the assassination of the head of state." As the audience entered into the world of Caesar's stabbing and the bitter rivalry of civil war, they were also impressed with the quality of the two-part, 80-minute production where many of the enthusiastic actors were performing for the first time. As Kattimani, who runs the Sankalpa Theatre Academy in Mysore, put it, "This is a chance to exploit the creativity of prisoners who are normal people like us except that they have landed themselves in prison with one sudden act of haste." Well, here's a chance to make some amends.
