Cyber ChatterED TRIP

SPEED TRIP

The thing not to do at indiawithin.com is type GOA when you want to track available flights from Delhi to Dabolim, Goa: it's the three-letter airport code for Christoforo Columbus airport in Genoa. It showed every way to and back from Genoa on a given day. The Galileo router and international currency converter are super and quick-but the rest of this India-centric travel site draws that classic comment: hmmm. The site is well thought out, but it has launched with many key links inactive (search is advertised but not on), many hotel tie-ups are incomplete but advertised, downloads are slow and content sloppy. There are two choices to spell itinerary: itinery and itinernary; you read about Rajasthan's desserts; and you get to eat a Picninc Launchat in Mount Abu. Why do people launch in a hurry?

STARDUST MEMORIES

These guys put what they like on the site. At upperstalls.com, it's a clickstep to nostalgia, put together by a bunch of movie nuts from Mumbai. Don't look for very classy stuff, but interesting things for which you would usually need to thumb old, overrated or out of print books. This way is easier. Click for the bio of filmmaker Baburao Painter, or a take on the stunning leading lady Patience Cooper (1920s-1940s). Read about the Balraj Sahni starrer Do Beegha Zameen or Nargis' Mother India or Satyajit Ray-directed Charulata. There's a chronology section and the occasional current stuff-don't surf here for breaking news in moviedom. And yes, don't forget to download that zip file of Devika Rani wallpaper.

»Net advertising rates are getting competitive. From a peak of about Rs 600 per 1,000 impressions earlier this year, even some of the biggest portals are charging just a quarter of that now, pressed by increasing competition and bargain basement advertising deals.

»Home use for CD writers is being driven by the launch of low-end CD writers by companies like Samsung, Kodak, HP, LG and Teac. With storage of 650 MB, they retail in a range of Rs 9,000-10,500. Grab those MP3s, and snapshots from that holiday in Bali.

»Education and career portal egurucool.com plans to launch a programme of fee-based courses from mid-September.

»India Internet World kicks off in Delhi (September 27-29) at Pragati Maidan. If you're in e-biz, check it out at www.iworldindia.com. Organised by a division of Microland, hot draws this year are John Sculley of Sculley Brothers, Alex Lightman, CEO of Charmed Technology, I-advertising.com President Chief Adam Boettinger and Lawrence Lessig, cyberlaw guru from Harvard Law School, among others.

»There's a new e-commerce management and information organisation. Called EcomnetIndia (Electronic Commerce Network of India), formed by a group of management and software professionals, it hopes to be to e-commerce what NASSCOM is to India's software industry.

UTILITY+

I'm not sure how to play this since the site doesn't mention the people behind it, but if there is something you need to know about the basics of blood-related illnesses (leukaemia, thrombosis, thalassaemia, spherocytosis or hereditary anaemia, and sickle cell disease) and treatment, bloodgivers.com is a needful browse. Designed primarily as an anonymous swap shop between prospective donors and receivers worldwide, the site offers contacts for free-you just need to sign up. It also has handy tips about major blood banks in Indian metros and some smaller cities with phone numbers-it lists most well-known hospitals and nursing homes-and addresses. There are also some first-rate links to mainly American web medicine facilities, and pure information.

VALUE ADD

Even money, because it tells you about your-or your client's- valuation. This is a site for engineers, accountants, valuers, surveyors and assessors under one umbrella, and at valuerplus.com, the bonus comes with clear explanations, guidelines and services.

The unpretentious website is about the worth of a company's or person's assets, and also offers a range of information, from plinth rates to cost indices for various Indian cities. Most of the information is stored in the member's area and it's a paysite-Rs 500 a year for individuals and Rs 2,500 a year for companies.
