STILL AROUND
COLLEGE CAPERS
Female film stars no longer need retire or play mum. They could always graduate to TV. Former Bollywood leading lady Farha (now better known as Tabu's sister) has once again found a small-screen slot for herself in Papa, a daily soap on B4U channel. It's not just another serial. Papa is the latest, after a four-year gap, from the Raman Kumar-Vinta Nanda team that gave us Tara, arguably post-cable-TV India's first small-screen blockbuster. Farha's role is as spicy as they get on soaps: she plays the wife of a man whose child from a forgotten affair suddenly turns up in their homes. Promoted from pretty prop, huh?

Film folk are no longer rustics fresh off the Punjab Mail or school drop-outs. Check out these phoren-returned alumni:

Fardeen Khan University of Massachusetts at Amherst
Ameesha Patel Tufts University
Tushar Kapoor University of Michigan
Kareena Kapoor Harvard University
Rohan Sippy Stanford University
Sunil Sippy Georgetown University
Tanuja Chandra Temple University

Q&A: Manoj Bajpai

"I get charged by the role and the script"

With several films lined up for release, Manoj Bajpai is looking forward to reliving his Satya glory. Bajpai on roles, guest appearances and love songs:

Q. Your brief appearance in Fiza seems to have raised several eyebrows. What made you do the small role?
A. Both Khalid Mohammad and Pradeep Guha have always been very encouraging. I'm grateful to them. So when they asked me, I didn't ask what my role was about. I just went ahead and did it. I don't regret it one bit.

Q. The Ghaath promos seem to have a Shool hangover. Are you in danger of being typecast as the new angry young man?
A. Not at all. My other releases-Zubeida, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Aks - are all different genres. I get charged by the role and the script. I'm proud to say that I'm experimenting a lot. It gives the actor in me immense satisfaction.

Q. What is the ultimate role? A Shah Rukh Khan-style fantasy love story?
A. I've never agreed with the fantasy love story. I'm currently working on a love story but of my kind. It will be unconventional and realistic.

Q. So will you sing songs?
A. Of course, I will sing songs.
