THE PLOT TO KILL RAJAN

1. September 14: Around 9.30 p.m. eight persons in formal dress arrive at Charan Court with a big cake. They tell the security guard that they are the invitees of Rohit Verma Alias D'Souza's party. The guard asks them to wait while he confirms this with the D'Souzas.

2. One of the visitors pushes the guard through the window grill and knocks him down with the butt of a gun. While four of them wait downstairs in the lobby, four others go up to the first floor flat. One of the two Thais among them holds the cake while the other rings the doorbell.

3. Rohit Verma and his wife are watching TV. Hearing the doorbell, Rohit peers through the magic eye and sees only two Thais with the cake. He opens the door for them.

4. All four men barge in and open fire on Rohit. His wife tries to shield him and gets injured. Their maid rushes out of the kitchen. One of the gunmen asks her, "Where is the other man?" The Vermas' two-year-old daughter comes out of one room and is pushed into a corner along with the maid.

5. Firing indiscriminately, the attackers reach Rajan's room, only to see bloodstains on the window panel. The don had taken two bullets, one in his abdomen and another in his thigh. But he manages to jump from the first floor and hide in the safety of the bushes in the garden.
