26 BLOODY YEARS

Haji Mastan1974: Dawood, son of a Konkani Muslim police constable, commits his first crime. Small fry. Haji Mastan, Karim Lala and Varadaraja Mudaliar rule supreme.

1984: Post-Emergency war of Dawood and Pathans. Dawood has Samad Khan, Lala's nephew, shot. Rama Naik and Bada Rajan (Chhota's guru) killed as well.

1988: Varadaraja has retired, other rivals dead. Dawood is top don. Rules over Rs 1,500 cr empire. Arun Gawli sole challenger.

1989: Dawood tries to semi-legitimise empire by investing in South Africa and west Asia through BCCI. Bank later collapses.

1991: Targeted by the Mumbai Police, Dawood has fled to Dubai. Assisted by Chhota Rajan and Anna Shetty he maintains a great social profile. Flourishes.

Bombay Blasts1992: The Babri Masjid demolition divides the Mumbai underworld along religious lines. Riots in Mumbai. Dawood is under community pressure to "act".

1993: Dawood executes bomb blasts in Mumbai. Rajan charges Dawood with communalism and leaves him. The war begins.

Rajan vows to kill bomb blast guilty. Goes after them. Today, of the 17 murder charges he faces, 12 are of bomb blast conspirators.

1995: Rajan men Sanjay Raggad, Diwakar Churi and Jukar killed in Nepal. Rajan retaliates by killing Shabbir of the D Company.

1999: Gangland alliances change. Abu Salem leaves Dubai and goes solo. Working out of Africa, he retains contact with Dawood.

Rajan flees Dubai for Kuala Lumpur after Dawood tells Sawtya Sawant to kill him. Later Sawant is killed, angering Dawood.

Verma's Body2000: Dawood sends killers to Bangkok to get Rajan after trying to split his rival's gang. Rajan escapes yet again. The war of the dons continues.
