Hung Jury
Delhi:
The Committee on Judicial Accountability (COJA) is a watchdog that often
barks. But recently, as some of its members contemplated a move against
Chief Justice of India A.S. Anand, the august body of jurists seemed to
have caught the flu of politics. Those who wanted Anand to be reprimanded
for his family members' involvement in a land case in Madhya Pradesh included
Kamini Jaiswal, Shanti Bhushan and Anil Divan. Voting against were luminaries
like V.M. Tarkunde and Rajinder Sachchar. The move was ultimately dropped
because of an unwritten coja rule that all decisions must be unanimous.

Bhopal: Party polls in the Congress have
thrown up a new pecking order. Pradesh Returning Officers (PROS) are being
wooed like never before. Take Kerala MP Vayalar Ravi, who is the pro for
Madhya Pradesh. Last week, his son's marriage saw top party leaders from
the state heading south, among them state Congress heavyweights Digvijay
Singh, V.C. Shukla and Suresh Pachouri. Ravi, of course, has not had so
much attention lavished on him since he was elected to the CWC in the
1970s as a Youth Congress leader.

Chandigarh: September has traditionally been
the time for birthday politics in Haryana and this year promises to be
no different. Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has planned a grand bash
on September 25 to celebrate the birthday of his father Devi Lal. Tauji
is expected to cut the birthday cake at a massive rally at Sonepat which
is essentially nothing more than a show to bolster the son’s political
fortunes. The whole of Haryana is expected to get a slice of the birthday
cake—in the form of welfare doles.

Lucknow:
Sonia Gandhi has turned truly emotional following the arrival of the latest
member of the Gandhi dynasty. She sent a message to the residents of Amethi,
saying how much she missed Rajiv on the occasion. Moved, local Congress
leaders have asked Sonia to bring the Gandhi heir to Amethi for a dekko
of the young one.
