Fun, Fearless Female
You wouldn't look at this picture and ask, "Who's that girl?" Malaika Arora - special - appearance movie star, music video girl, model and veejay - is well past that stage. So when Cosmopolitan was looking for an Indian face for their first ever desi cover, they zeroed in on hers. It's for the magazine's fourth anniversary issue, and Arora makes a fitting successor to the likes of Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Laetitia Casta who've been there before. Says lensman Farrokh Chothia who did the shoot for Cosmo: "Malaika is absolutely fabulous to work with. She's gorgeous and an absolute pro." She's also a typical Cosmo girl: a fun, fearless female.

Brother Act

Goodness ... it runs in the family. Two years after his brother Steve got involved with the Calcutta children's home Udayan, fellow-nice-guy Mark Waugh is sponsoring a little girl from its sister institution, Nivedita Bhawan. Nine-year-old Aloka Nayak hasn't seen her famous benefactor, but she knows him from a photograph of the Australian cricket team that the high commissioner presented to the home. "She keeps asking if Mark will also come visiting, like Steve," says Mary D'Rozario of Nivedita Bhawan. Will he?

On Her Side

Nina Memon was a toddler when she lost her parents, legendary singer Geeta Dutt and filmmaker-actor Guru Dutt. But though she doesn't remember dad, and memories of mum are "misty", the world can't forget. It makes things easier as she approaches music companies these days with her debut pop album. The 38-year-old, by the way, "didn't want to do the usual thing: make a demo, then do as the company says. I wanted to give them a finished product". Lady, you've got goodwill and guts on your side.

You Who?

Name: Riya Sen. Claim to fame: Suchitra Sen's granddaughter; Moon Moon Sen's daughter; 19 years, a music video and some modelling assignments old. When Sen recently found a horse beaten, abused and left to die near Juhu beach, she shot off a letter to Mumbai Mayor Hareshwar Patil requesting him to stop joy rides on the beach. "I wish more celebrities would lend their name to worthy causes," she says. Hey, kind gesture but "celebrity"? Meaning who? One animal rights group even sent out a letter saying "Death of overworked, dehydrated animal angers film star". Film star? Meaning who?
