LOOKING GLASS

Mumbai
Store
You'll find it all at the Saga Department Store in Mumbai: trinkets for just Rs 200, a one-of-a-kind Kashmiri carpet for Rs 12 lakh, assorted gemstones, 19th century silverware, silk carpets, pottery, haute couture garments and plenty more. While the Saga stores in Delhi and Chennai stock only traditional Indian creations, this new Mumbai branch sells a smattering of imported goods too. Says R. Mir, chairman of the Cottage Industries Exposition Group that's behind the store: "Mumbai was chosen for this first-of-a-kind fusion (between indigenous and imported products) store since the city's residents are a mixture of savvy Indians with maximum exposure to western lifestyle and also discerning foreigners." Saga also has in-house consultants to advise customers on those tricky questions about colour combinations in home decor and so on. Address: 257, S.V. Road, Bandra-West. For further information, call (022) 655-2347. Fax: 655-2183.

The owners are planning "only women" hours targeted at housewives and older ladies, and later, career counselling sessions every Saturday at select dromes across India. Coming up are at least 100 such cyber cafes in 35 cities before March 2001. For further information, call (080) 699-1090.

Delhi
Conference
World Voices is a global coalition of youth with somewhat lofty-sounding objectives: "Our greatest challenge lies in making young people aware of the power their everyday decisions, their attitudes and values have," says member Ranica Barua. But they aren't just talking. Coming up on November 4 & 5 is a conference on Changing Ideas of Wealth, Progress and Power. Participants include filmmaker Mahesh Mathai, Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy and ecologist Vandana Shiva. Telephone: (011) 614-5999/1823.
