It was like fashion week again with a string of shows in Dlehi and Mumbai

By Leher Kala, Natasha Israni and Anshul Avijit

Rohit Bal and Shah Rukh Khan on stage

ROHIT BAL: THIS AND THAT The designer's clothes had to share ramp space with the Omega Awards for Excellence at Mumbai's Oberoi Hotel last week. "It's wonderful to be back. No, I don't mean careerwise," tittered Omega brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan, who presented awards to Karan Johar and Asha Bhosle. There were no shortage of roles for him here-he emceed the show and walked the ramp for Bal. Delhi might have yawned: Bal did a virtual repeat of his show at the recent Lakme India Fashion Week-trousers in white and jackets with fur trimming. It was still fun for the Mumbai crowd, who hadn't seen it. Popular Mumbai socialites even modelled Bal's outfits. Businessman Suresh Bhojwani twirled naughtily, while adman Kailash Surendranath enjoyed the squeals from mischievous lady guests. Like we said, fun.

The Provogue Show

PROVOGUE: ZEAL APPEAL They're not known for top-end designs. But at least their shows are zippy. Earlier this year, Hrithik Roshan did an on-stage jig for Provogue, the hip casuals. Last week, at Delhi's Maurya Sheraton, models gyrated to Marathi songs. It was almost enough to make the crowd forget the two-hour delay. "C'mon Delhi, let's party," yelled Mumbai model-emcee Rakshanda Khan to the irate audience. When Milind Soman, Jas Arora and Bipasha Basu emerged dancing, the mood picked up-somewhat. "We like to keep our shows interactive and fun," says Shivkaran Singh of Provogue. Being punctual would help.

ASHISH SONI: SURPRISE, SURPRISE He tries to be different. This time it worked. After a half-baked show at Khajuraho and a relatively unexciting collection at the fashion week, Ashish Soni's couture show at Delhi's French Cultural Centre had some zing-sequinned halter tops and three-piece pastel suits. Even the spoof on beauty pageants was funny. "I'll donate half my money to charity and the rest to out-of-work models," announced one mannequin, mimicking beauty queens. Good thing Lara Dutta wasn't there.

ENSEMBLE: GLAMOUR, NO CLAMOUR Far removed from the pomp of 1,000-strong crowd, seven designers quietly showed their apparel attitude at Tarun Tahiliani's store, Ensemble in Delhi. Akki Narula was typically asymmetrical and kitsch (with clothes-hanger clips as props), Monisha Jaising showed a penchant for patchwork, Shreela Debi got mirrorwork to match impishly with contemporary cuts while the Ensemble Design Studio kept its eye on the upcoming marriage season. More of clothes, less of clamour. Wish more shows were like this.

All the right strokes: "I'm not sure I'll even turn pro," says 16-year-old Chandigarh golfer Irina Brar (right). Going by her performance, she should. At the Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship held at the Delhi Golf Club, this minus 2 handicap player won the title with a huge seven-stroke lead over Parnita Garewal, 19 (left). Brar's immediate plans? A tournament in Hong Kong, plus clearing school exams. "We're also lobbying for a women's golf circuit in India," says Garewal. Seems like the future's all chalked out. -Leher Kala
