BUSH
vs GORE
|
|
Who
will come down harder on the nuclear front?
|
| Bush
has made it clear he isnt going to verify the ctbt in its current
form. So there would be less pressure on India to sign it, though
there would be continued insistence to show nuclear restraint. |
Gore
is categorical that ctbt is his top priority. But with Republicans
in a majority in Congress, will find it difficult to make speedy progress.
Will also push India hard to exercise nuclear restraint. |
|
What
will the new equations on India and Pakistan be?
|
| Sees
India as an important counterforce to China. Not likely to mediate
on the Kashmir issue. Will use economic carrot to get Pakistan to
curb terrorism. But will also maintain good relations with it. |
Will
continue Clintons recent policy of not equating India with Pakistan.
Will come down strongly on Pakistan on international terrorism but
will not sever links. May play the role of peacemaker in Kashmir. |
|
Will
economic sanctions be lifted?
|
| Bush
may find it easier to lift sanctions soon after he takes charge. Will
push for greater trade relations and may ease ban on high-technology
transfers. |
May
not immediately lift them because of tough line on the nuke issue.
But will push for an increase in trade, especially in information
technology. |
