Q&A

Rahul Dev

After a three-and-a-half year wait, model Rahul Dev finally made his debut with the recently released Champion. Critics panned the film but praised his performance. The actor on roles and how not to get slotted.

Q. Critics liked your performance but a few seemed confused whether it was acting or your looks.
A. Well, Charlie Chaplin said that if you look the part, then you don't have to act. I don't believe in being loud. I find that stupid. Understated things work much better.

Q. What's next?
A. Aashiq, in which I'm a bad guy again, Ashoka the Great, in which I have a very strong supporting role, and Mukt, in which I'm the hero opposite Aditi Govitrikar.

Q. So you don't want to be bad?
A. No, I don't want to get slotted. I'm here to do exciting roles. I hope they happen.

Q. How much do you work out?
A. For two and a half hours daily.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Will Raju Chacha, made for a rumoured Rs 30 crore, recover its investment? Ajay Devgan has made the film with passion and paise and is distributing it himself.

Hot Debutant

Vivek Oberoi, the son of actor Suresh Oberoi, has filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma all excited. After seeing a screen test, Varma signed Oberoi not for one but three films, including an underworld saga tentatively titled Company. "He's one of the best actors I've seen," Varma says enthusiastically. We'll see.

Changing Tracks

After 16 years of playing wife and mom, retired heroine Rati Agnihotri decided to take on a new role. After she signed up with Rahul Rawail for Kuch khatti, kuch meethi, filmmakers are making a beeline for her door. She currently has five films on hand including Subhash Ghai's Yaadein. Agnihotri, who has a 14-year-old son, is playing mom to the likes of Bobby Deol. But that doesn't bother her. "I am a mom in real life," she says. "These characters are in tune with my sensibilities at this point in life. I would feel foolish running around trees now." Good thinking.

Antara, Act II

She played the sassy best friend in Ram Gopal Varma's Mast and then did the disappearing act. Now Antara Maali is back in action with Khiladi 420. Also, in this film she finally gets to do the glam gal act that includes a steamy song number with Akshay Kumar. "It's a typical khiladi film-inane and fun. But I was very excited when I was doing it. It's nice to look good for a change." Coming up next are a couple of more artistic projects. "But I'll always be around," Antara promises, "I can't do anything better than acting."
