LOOKING GLASS

MUMBAI
RESTAURANT
There's good news for all Valley enthusiasts. Shikara, a recently renovated restaurant on the Mumbai-Pune highway, has tried hard to give a complete Kashmiri experience-cascading water, wooden shikaras and, of course, authentic Kashmiri cuisine (apart from the indispensable Punjabi, Mughlai and Chinese platters). There are also live ghazals, an astrologer, a magician, a mehendiwali, a chudi maker as well as an amusement park to entertain children. Dinner for two costs Rs 400. Call (022) 767-2195.

EXHIBITION
Painter couple Gogi Saroj Pal and Ved Nayyar were deeply disturbed by the aftermath of the Orissa cyclone and the plight of the families of soldiers killed in Kargil. So their impassioned pictorial plea Caring and Sharing-a joint exhibition of their small paintings at Jamaat Gallery-had plenty of poignant faces and gaunt twisted forms. Says Nayyar: "For many years my icon, an elongated human form, mostly a female, has been centre stage in my creative visual imagery." Check out this meeting point between two artists traversing separate paths. On till January 6, 2001. Call (022) 218-0189.

MAGAZINE
Perfect Ten, a new bi-monthly interior design magazine takes on a different theme for a home in each issue with plenty of wide-ranging examples in a crisp, well-focused layout. Like in the first one it showcased 10 small homes that imaginatively made use of pressing space constraints. "The idea is to solve the readers' queries and analyse the latest design trends," says Editor, Sarita Vijayan. The next issue features the ideal get-away home. Priced Rs 30 per issue. For more information call (022) 762-9200/9191.

DELHI
BAR
The Taj Mahal on Mansingh Road, in a major renovating spree, rehashed its lobby, put a tiger-striped wall-to-wall in the hugely popular Machan and completely transformed its seafood special hangout, Captain's Cabin, into a spacious, split-level, burnt sienna shaded bar now called Rick's. The bar is a personification of a fictitious character called Rick who was born in Morocco, and is incidentally the nephew of Great Uncle Rick, the star of the B&W classic Casablanca. Plenty of cocktails are available at the semi-circular bar table but there are five that have been specially created for Rick's-like the vodka-based current favourite, Guav-berry Martini. Dinner has some tempting south-east Asian dishes (like the Salmon Laksa Curry). Meal for two: Rs 2,000 (minus alcohol). Call (011) 302-6162.

STORE
Mumbai's swanky store for women's wear And has opened an outlet in South Extension. The store has some well-tailored trousers and jackets perfect for the office, plus some chic contemporary evening wear with asymmetrical cuts and diagonal necklines. The store also offers the And-vantage Loyalty Programme-so you earn points whenever you purchase an item, and redeem them for clothes. Call (011) 465-2888 for details.
