DEATHQUAKE;
POLITICS OF PERIL
LEFT
Offering Help

| Marching
in aid of quake victims |
Little Feat:
Though ideologically and geographically far from capitalist, saffron Gujarat,
India's leftist parties did come to the aid of the earthquake victims.
The Left Front (LF) Government in West Bengal contributed Rs 2 crore.
Its counterpart
in Kerala came up with Rs 1 crore. The CPI(M) unit in Tripura put together
Rs 25,000, a small sum but not a mean one in a tiny north-eastern state
of limited resources. In Kolkata, the LF also organised a homage march
(above right).
