CARE TODAY: LEST WE FORGET

Getting On In Life

Undaunted by the refusal of his family to look after him when he lost his limbs, a soldier attempts to begin life afresh. Among his plans is a new house with CARE TODAY's support.

EX-HAVILDAR PAWAN BIR SINGH
23 Rajput Regiment

NEW SKILL: Singh is now computer-literate

On January 27, 1999, A Mine Blast During Routine patrolling in the Naushera sector badly injured Havildar Pawan Bir Singh. He was evacuated to 150 General Hospital at Rajouri where his legs were amputated. The loss of his limbs was a big shock to Singh but a more painful experience awaited him on his release from hospital: his family refused to look after him. The disabled soldier, who put in 12 years of service for the nation, has since been living with his wife and son in Phouda village in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. He has received no rehabilitation aid from the state Government. The 33-year-old Singh, educated up to the high school level, decided to acquire computer skills. He is nearing the end of a one-year course at the army's Queen Mary's Technical Institute in Pune. Singh would like to take up a civilian job though he has the option of continuing in the army after he completes the course. He will build a house with CARE TODAY's support, but at present there's no one at home to supervise the construction. CARE TODAY has, therefore, put Rs 3 lakh in a fixed deposit for him to access when he finishes his course and is free to build the house.
