Bloody Finale
In life, Phoolan Devi combined the brutal
underbelly of India with political fame and glamour. Gunned down in Delhi,
her death could become the occasion for a new round of caste conflict
in Uttar Pradesh. Phoolan
is being reinvented posthumously.

CAPLOOKS
Marital Trouble
Bhopal:
When reports of Uma Bharati's marriage to Govindacharya were broadcast
by a TV channel, Congressmen began distributing sweets. Even Chief Minister
Digvijay Singh called to congratulate her. BJP workers, meanwhile, were
stunned and Bharati herself shell-shocked. The episode ended with the
channel that claimed the scoop running grovelling apologies for 24 hours.
Some people now say this was only a ruse to flush Govindacharya out of
his retreat. His friends have a better theory: that it was a conspiracy
by proponents of globalisation.
Jaw-Jaw, War-War
Chandigarh: The Akalis are quoting Marie
Antoinette in their duel with Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh, which
shows how far things have gone. It started with Singh saying if elected,
he would set up an inquiry into corruption and Chief Minister Parkash
Singh Badal would be treated on an equal footing with a patwari. Badal
retorted by calling Singh a political minion and saying those living in
glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Now Singh's royal background is being
dug into, and there has been talk of his "palaces and pleasures".
Low Level Drive
Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister S.M.
Krishna is on an austerity drive. The state is reeling under drought and
he has appealed to the Centre for relief. However, he himself remains
a few notches above austerity. He recently became the first chief minister
to pick up Hyundai's latest luxury sedan, the Rs 14- lakh Sonata. "He
paid for it, it is not gratis," Hyundai Motor India Ltd President
A.P. Gandhi told india today. A source close to Krishna says "he
has a taste for the elegant things in life". Certainly. And his taste
for drought relief?
How
To Win Friends
Lucknow: Being nice pays. First, Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh went uninvited to greet Samajwadi
Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav on his birthday. Then he visited V.P.
Singh. Now, after announcing a pay hike for teachers, he is being felicitated
by teachers' union leader O.P. Sharma who had campaigned hard against
A.B. Vajpayee in the 1999 elections.
