Bloody Finale
In life, Phoolan Devi combined the brutal
underbelly of India with political fame and glamour. Gunned down in Delhi,
her death could become the occasion for a new round of caste conflict
in Uttar Pradesh. Phoolan
is being reinvented posthumously.
A report.

5 The trio abandon the car on Pt. Pant Marg and commandeer an autorickshaw
at gunpoint.
|
|
1.45 p.m.
6 Phoolan is lifted from a pool of blood and rushed to RML Hospital
where she is declared brought dead by doctors.
|

|

7 Police locate abandoned car, recover two .32 revolvers and
masks as well as empty cartridges from the scene of the crime.
|
|
|
Phoolan's killers used a green Maruti to escape,
the same car which had taken her to Parliament that morning.
The killing exposes lax security in Lutyens' Delhi where the nation's
VIPs, including MPs, reside. The nation is shocked at the brazen
manner of the daylight attack.
