Paanch Punctured

After the realistic screenplay of Satya and Shool, Anurag Kashyap has tried it again with Paanch. It is based on the life of a group of young grunge musicians who score underground music while high on drugs. The story is based on the murder of a couple by a young college-goer in Pune. It's a caper like Khel Khel Main where young college students accidentally step into crime. The censor board could not grasp the dark portrait of mindless violence today's youth indulge in and rejected the film, saying that it did not have any positive social message. Says Kashyap: "It is unfortunate that the censor board could not accept reality. But the message is clear-that you cannot make an honest film." Kashyap feels this throttles his freedom of expression and says he will struggle to exhibit this film come what may.

Older And Wiser

Fresh and sexy model Arjun Rampal was supposed to have been launched in films three years ago in Shantanu Sheorey's Jadh. The film was delayed and he made his debut with Rajiv Rai's Pyaar Ishq aur Mohabbat. Breaking the myth that models don't make good actors, Rampal has won critical acclaim. "I am excited about the positive public response," he says. With three films on the floor-Dil Hai Tumhara, Deewanapan and All the Best-Rampal is all set to make it big in Bollywood.

Role Call

Shekhar Suman gets a new lease of life on the big screen. Nine of them to be precise. Suman equals Sanjeev Kumar's record of playing nine different roles in the 1970s movie Naya Din Nayee Raat. Suman is going to play these roles in David Dhawan's next venture, Chor Machaye Shor. He plays a theatre actor who becomes different characters-including a policeman, a sardar and a lady mimicking various film personalities. Says Suman: "It is a typical David Dhawan film full of fun and frolic. Every character I play promises to tickle your funny bone". Comparisons with the late Sanjeev Kumar are inevitable, and Suman describes the project as a challenge. Now, whether he will be remembered for his nine lives depends on his versatility.
