Rajasthan
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on the pulling down of the Sawai Bhoj mosque
in a temple complex at Asind.
Q. Wasn't there communal tension after the
incident?
A. It did not last beyond a
few hours. There were no curfews or restrictions in Asind.
Q. Have you taken any remedial measures?
A. We persuaded the Gurjars
to remove the Hanuman idol from the platform. This should be considered
a big success.
Q. But the problem of the mosque wall remains.
A. I am trying to see that
the Gurjars themselves rebuild the so-called Kalandari mosque.
Q. Why doesn't the Government do it?
A. I want a permanent solution
based on goodwill.
Q. Would the earlier amity ever be restored?
A.
Why not? For centuries, the Gurjars allowed this mosque wall to remain
there and even maintained a dargah in the temple premises. Now they have
removed the Hanuman idol. The Gurjars are a tolerant people.
Q. And what do Muslim leaders feel about
this?
A. They
also feel that such things ought to be done in a certain way to eliminate
hatred.
Q. So what is the hurdle?
A.
Interference created some problems. Left to themselves, things will be
normal soon.
